Abstract

We conduct an incentivized experiment to study how individuals form trust in algorithmic financial advice. Participants make investment decisions with the option to follow recommendations from either a human advisor or a robo-advisor. We find that algorithm aversion is context-dependent: participants trust algorithms more for diversification but prefer human advice for downside protection.
