CBDC Adoption and Payment Behavior: Evidence from a Field Experiment
Abstract
We report results from a field experiment studying how the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) affects payment behavior. Working with a pilot CBDC program, we randomize access and incentives across 5,000 participants to measure substitution patterns between cash, cards, and digital currency. Our results shed light on the design features that drive CBDC adoption.
